Why Ruby Native

Native iOS and Android apps from your existing Rails codebase.

A one-page overview for teams deciding on a mobile app: what Ruby Native does, what it asks of your team, what it costs, and how it handles security and ownership.

The problem Ruby Native solves

So you've decided your customers need an app. The usual ways to get there are hiring a mobile team, paying an agency, or rebuilding the frontend in React Native. Each one adds a second codebase, a second roadmap, and months before anything ships.

What Ruby Native does

  • One roadmap. Your team makes each product decision once, in your Rails app. Ruby Native ships it as real native iOS and Android apps.
  • Real native apps. Native tab bars, navigation, menus, and push notifications, built to pass App Store and Google Play review.
  • The store listing, from the dashboard or your repo. Your team's coding agent drafts the name, subtitle, keywords, and description. Anyone can edit them in the dashboard or as a file in your repo, and see exactly what changes before it goes to either store. Builds, screenshots, testers, and the submission run the same way.
  • Updates with every deploy. Content comes from your Rails app, so every deploy updates the apps. A store release is only needed when Ruby Native releases a new version, or when you change something like the app icon.
  • Kept current. When Apple or Google ships a new OS, Ruby Native is updated for it, and builds always use the tools the stores require. Your team doesn't have to track it, plan for it, or debug it.
  • A human on your side through review. Launch review For $999, a launch review puts an expert on your side: Joe Masilotti, who has taken 30+ apps through review, reviews your listing before you submit and answers any rejection until that version is approved. You get exactly what to change, or the reply to send, within two business days. How the launch review works.

What it takes from your team

A developer who works on your Rails app, ideally with a coding agent. Setup usually takes a day or two. After that, the apps ship with your normal deploys. Nobody needs mobile or app store experience.

Ruby Native guides your team through every step, in the dashboard, the CLI, and your coding agent. The one thing it can't cover is the stores' own fees: $99 a year to Apple and $25 once to Google.

Costs and timelines are typical ranges, not quotes. The customer launches below are real.

Pricing

  • Ruby Native, $199/month per app. Billed monthly, cancel any time. Your Rails app in the App Store and Google Play, shipped by your own team.
  • Launch review, $999 per review. A human on your side through App Review, for the version you are about to submit.

Prefer annual? It's $1,990 a year, two months free. You pay once your App Store Connect key or Play Console access checks out, the first moment your app can actually ship. Every app is its own subscription with unlimited team members, and if you cancel, you keep a copy of the native source for your app. Full pricing.

Security and ownership

  • Credentials are encrypted at rest, builds run on throwaway machines, and we never touch your Rails source code. The security page is written for vendor reviews.
  • You can download a copy of the native source for your app at any time, and keep it after you cancel.
  • Ruby Native is built on Hotwire Native, the open-source library 37signals has run Basecamp and HEY on since 2017. If Ruby Native ever went away, your app would still be built on a library 37signals maintains.

Teams already live

  • StatusGator: Two years stuck behind a second codebase, now shipping from Rails.

  • Equipe: Migrated a decade-old Hotwire Native app to a single config file.

  • Foxance: An existing Rails app, in the App Store in two days.
